WHO IS BOATSHED CHEESE?
Located just an hour from Melbourne along the beautiful Mornington Peninsula in the town of Dromana, BoatShed Cheese is an award-winning cheesery, renowned for its handmade artisan, French-style cheeses. Begun in 2011, by Tamara Newing of Tamara’s Kitchen, a well-known Melbourne food professional, BoatShed Cheese specialises in handcrafting small batch cheese using traditional French methods. But they don’t focus on just one type of milk. They use goat, cow, sheep and buffalo milk to create cheeses that taste amazing, look beautiful and represent the best of the local area (and the best of the local milk). These beautiful cheeses have won dozens of awards, both in Australia and overseas, and are in constant demand in Melbourne’s restaurants, cafes and cheese-loving homes. From the Tempest, a donut-shaped, ashed oozy buffalo cheese to the Horizon, a mild, pressed goat cheese with a line of ash through its centre, these cheeses represent everything that artisan products should be.
HANDCRAFTED AND LOCALLY FOCUSED
The BoatShed team uses the fundamentals found in old world cheese making, and combines this with beautiful high-quality milk found across Victoria to handcraft cheeses that are more than the sum of their parts. With their cheeses BoatShed tries to push out the boundaries, adding modern flavours and techniques to their traditional cheesemaking processes. They love to keep things local as well. Their Washed By the Bay range features four washed rinds that are all brushed with local Mornington Peninsula spirits, such as the Chief’s Son ‘Standard 900’ and the Bass & Flinders ‘Gin 10’. And their Mutiny washed curd buffalo milk cheese has been ‘satined’ with coffee from Dromana’s own Little Rebel Coffee Roastery. Collaborating with other Peninsula-based businesses helps them create incredible limited run cheeses that showcase everything the area and its incredible artisans have to offer. And cheese lovers, like ourselves, are the lucky recipients!
