Who is behind Gippsland Salt Co.?
Partners Sally and Emma often get asked how they started Gippsland Salt Co. and why do they love salts so much?
Sal has over thirty (!!) years’ experience in retail management and is currently a commercial real estate agent in Sale. She is a lover of animals great and small, travelling, and being aunty to a tribe of nieces and nephews. At Gippsland, Sal does majority of their deliveries and assures all salts are enthusiastically sung to with 1980's classics.
Em is a born and bred Sale girl. Over the years, she has worked in many local hospitality venues as a barista, restaurant manager, and chef. Em is currently the Executive Chef at The Criterion Hotel, Sale @crihotelsale which is the winner of the 2021 AHA Victorian Regional Hotel of the year. You may already follow her on Instagram @the_unqualifiedchef. In her downtime, you may catch her gardening with a glass of gin, with her dogs in toe.
Cooking with salt, using brines, cures and confit salts is something Em has perfected over her years as a chef. The cocktail salts come from a love of Margaritas and sunshine.
When COVID hit and Victorians were forced into lockdown after lockdown, Sal and Em decided to take this passion and turn it into a side hustle. Their first orders went out in early September 2021 and since then, they have been amazed and humbled at how their little company has taken off. Gippsland Salt Co currently has over fifteen stockists and works with many more amazing companies. The bonus is being able to support other local businesses and trade with them.
They use as much local produce as they can from the beautiful Gunaikurnai Country they live on and are proud to show off Gippsland to the rest of Australia.
But perhaps most importantly, they are a couple of 'saltshakers', doing what they love.
