WHO IS TARAGO RIVER CHEESE COMPANY?

Tarago River Cheese Company is set in the heart of Victoria’s food-producing haven, Gippsland. Begun in the 1980s as a joint venture between two local farming families—the Jensens and the Johnsons—the Tarago River Cheese Company are frontrunners in the Australian cheese making world. In fact, they crafted Australia’s first, locally-produced, commercially-available blue cheese (and their blues are still incredible today!).



Their 100ha, free-range farm boasts 400 of the happiest, healthiest milking cows in Australia. This is a result of a fierce focus on the health and wellbeing of their animals and of the land itself. Of course, this is an excellent way to manage their land and resources, but it also means the best milk for producing the best cheeses, something the Tarago River team is incredibly proud of.

The success (and deliciousness!) of the Tarago River Cheese Company’s products is a result of luscious fresh milk, meticulous craftsmanship and a firm adherence to best practice to produce a fantastic array of premium, handmade farmhouse cheeses.

The team at Tarago believe that farmhouse cheese making is a time-honoured way of life. While they firmly embrace modern technology and scientific advancements, they also understand that careful attention to detail within the traditional cheesemaking practices ensures that they’re creating only the best, most beautiful and moreish Australian cheeses.

They start with clean, fresh milk derived from happy, healthy, free-range cows. Tarago River herds are fed on milk whey, homegrown chicory and extra grain to ensure they are in top-notch condition and their milk is full of good fat and protein. Then the team work together to make the careful choices and decisions needed to harness the complex cheese-making processes and ensure that the outcome is a truly unique and delicious experience.

ABOUT THE GIPPSLAND REGION

Gippsland is one of the most widely varied areas in all of Australia. Within its regional borders you can find pristine beaches, wild rainforests, snowfields, bush tracks and, of course, amazing food producers. From wine to chocolate to cheese, if you’re a foodie, Gippsland offers a taste of it all. In fact, the artisan, locally-produced food and wine permeates the entire area whether you’re stopping off for a quick breaky at a roadside café, or heading to Tarago River Cheese’s farmhouse door.


If you want to take in some culture (between cheese tastings that is!), Gippsland has some wonderful art galleries and museums throughout the region. It also hosts a variety of major festivals, including the Creative Gippsland Arts Festival and Maffra Mardi Gras, as well as music festivals in Boolarra, Inveroch and Paynesville.
